LAS VEGAS, Nevada — At 1 PM Thursday, Vegas Golden Knights coach John Tortorella had a media availability at VGK training headquarters. Torts fielded questions for five minutes and 39 seconds before getting ready for the Vegas vs Anaheim Ducks Game 3 playoff game Friday.
I recall Tortorella from his days coaching the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004 when I was at the Tampa Tribune where I worked as a sports-business reporter in the business department in the Trib newsroom.
The Lightning won the Stanley Cup championship that season. One of the team’s brightest stars was Martin St. Louis, who led the NHL in scoring and won the league’s MVP award in 2004.
St. Louis is now coaching the Montreal Canadiens, which defeated his old Tampa Bay team in seven games in this postseason’s first round. St. Louis’ Montreal squad is playing the Buffalo Sabres in Round 2.
I asked Torts whether he has been in touch with St. Louis and how crazy it would be if he faced his former Tampa Bay player in a potential Stanley Cup final.
Tortorella was not going to respond about facing off against St. Louis for a NHL championship.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa,” Torts told me, having no part in talking about a Stanley Cup Final with St. Louis.
“Let’s just leave it at that. I have been in touch with Marty,” Tortorella said.
Torts offered this smile to LVSportsBiz.com after he answered the question:

You can watch all 5:39 of the the Torts media availability on this VGK video, entitled by the VGK, “Tortorella’s ‘Words of Wisdom,’ ” The LVSportsBiz.com question comes up about 38 seconds into the video.
