The Vegas Golden Knights returned to the Big Ice House by the Strip after snagging seven of eight points on a four-game road trip that consisted of playing quality teams like the Blues, Predators, Jets and Wild.
The recent uptick in play has propelled the Knights into third place in the division, which would be an automatic playoff berth.
Tonight, the division-leading Vancouver Canucks came to town but minus its regular goalie who has haunted the Golden Knights. Thatcher Demko typically is rock-solid against Vegas, but he’s rehabbing an injured knee and 32-year-old veteran Casey DeSmith is in goal for the Canucks.
Just the facts: Vegas Golden Knights 6 Vancouver Canucks 3
Golden Knights scoring: Anthony Mantha opened the scoring with his 22nd after Desmith stopped a nice move by VGK winger Pavel Dorofeyev. Them Jonathan Marchessault scored his 41st for a 2-0 Vegas lead. After Vancouver’s Nils Hoglander scored, Jack Eichel notched his 26th before Noah Hanifin scored his 12th for a Vegas 4-1 lead after one.
In period two, William Karlsson had an easy goal on the power play, his 26th to give the VGK a 5-1 lead. Vancouver’s talented defenseman Quinn Hughes scored his 14th to cut the VGK lead down to 5-2 after two periods.
Hughes scored again in the third, but VGK winger Brett Howden scored his eighth to restore Vegas’ three-goal lead.
Attendance: 18,366
Story line: VGK ambushed Vancouver in the first period without Demko in goal for the Canucks. VGK are now 6-0-1 in their last seven games as they make a stretch run toward the postseason.
Weird stat of the night: VGK defenseman Shea Theodore, in his 40th game of the season, was penalized for the first time all season, drawing a double minor for his first four minutes in the box in 2023-24.
VGK goalie stability: Logan Thompson was solid and looked poised.
Golden Knights record: 42-25-8 for 92 points, good for third place in the Pacific Division, trailing Vancouver (100 points) and Edmonton (95 points).
VGK schedule: Knights hit the road for games against the Coyotes, Canucks and Oilers. Then Vegas wraps up the season with home games against the Wild, Avalanche, Blackhawks and Ducks.
