In a competitive market with so sports options, UNLV played a first half against Idaho State at Allegiant Stadium that stood out Saturday.

In its 2022 season-opener, UNLV piled up 45 points in the first half — including 35 alone in the second quarter — and cruised by Idaho State, 52-21.

UNLV said attendance came in at 19,579.

Sophomore quarterback Doug Brumfield shined as he was a model of efficiency.

The southpaw completed 21 of 25 throws for 356 yards and four touchdowns.

“I really enjoyed the efficiency of the first half, the way we moved the ball around and the way we moved,” UNLV coach Marcus Arroyo said.

Arroyo mentioned the Rebels, “Did a nice job on defense stopping the run game … I thought we did a good job of taking care of football — zero turnovers. I think that is a big deal, especially for week one.”

The Rebels played on the natural turf surface used by the Las Vegas Raiders the night before when the Raiders played the New England Patriots on Friday. UNLV typically plays on artificial turf at Allegiant Stadium, but the Raiders played at 5:15 PM Friday and UNLV played at 12:30 PM Saturday.

Allegiant Stadium, which is run by the Raiders, is among a handful of football stadium used by both an NFL team and the local college team. The UNLV logo arch was painted at midfield on Friday night after the Raiders game.

After UNLV played the earliest game in its 55-year football history, the Rebels will have a week off and then play California on the road Sept. 10.
