It was a Tuesday night and another 100-degree-plus day in Las Vegas. Typically, attendance used to fall off at the local minor league baseball park when the former 51s played at downtown Cashman Field this time of year.

But the Aviators announced attendance at 7,683 Tuesday as the New Orleans Baby Cakes (Triple A affiliate of Miami Marlins) defeated the Reyes de Plata (the Spanish name for the Las Vegas Aviators), 8-7.

After 53 home dates, the Aviators lead the minors in attendance, averaging 9,313 a game at the $150 million Downtown Summerlin ballpark in its inaugural year.

The website, baseballparks.com, gave its ballpark of the year award to the Aviators’ venue.

The baseball park is also holding movie nights called Flicks on the Field, starting Aug. 8 with admission of $2.
