Crews began hanging a “Las Vegas Ballpark” sign on the Las Vegas Aviators’ new $150 million ballyard in Summerlin Wednesday, while LVSportsBiz.com has learned that pedestrian flasher signs will be installed at crosswalks near roundabouts leading to the ballpark on South Pavilion Center Drive where motorists routinely drive faster than the posted 30 mph speed limit.

The Aviators’ new ballpark, which will house the Oakland A’s Triple A minor league team, opens April 9. The venue has room for 10,000 fans, including fixed seating for 8,200. There’s 22 suites, a 360-degree concourse and a pool beyond the centerfield fence.

LVSportsBiz.com reported on potential pedestrian safety issues because some fans will have to cross South Pavilion Center Drive from the Downtown Summerlin shopping center and business district to reach the ballpark. It’s obvious that many motorists drive faster than the 30 mph speed limit that is posted along the road and some motorists do not yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks that link the shopping center parking lot with the ballpark near a round-about.

On Wednesday morning, LVSportsBiz.com saw a crew working on a parking lot across the street from the minor league baseball venue site.

LVSportsBiz.com contacted Howard Hughes Corporation, the developer of Summerlin and owner of the Aviators that is building the ballpark., about the pedestrian safety issues along South Pavilion Center Drive and at the crosswalks.

Two weeks ago, a spokesperson for Howard Hughes Corp., Melissa Warren, said, “Flashers will be installed at crosswalks near the roundabouts . . . There is also a plan to have crossing guards on all game days/nights.”

LVSportsBiz.com recommends the Las Vegas Metro Police Department start cracking down on speeding motorists along South Pavilion Center Drive because the new ballpark, new apartments being built at South Pavilion Center Drive and Sahara Avenue and a new area hotel means there will be more pedestrians and bicyclists along Pavilion Center Drive.
