Tiger vs. Phil: Too Late, Too Gimmicky

Tiger v. Phil, dubbed “The Match” with a $9 million payout at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, would’ve been cool like 15 years ago when they were both still good and people actually cared about Phil Mickelson.

I’m just not sure what purpose this gimmick serves. Like Mayweather-Pacquaio, this thing would’ve been great when both golfers were in their prime.

Tiger is finally back (so it seems after his strong major finishes this year), but I can’t even tell you the last time I heard anything pertinent to Phil Mickelson with the exception of the whole Billy Walters ordeal.

He’s not anywhere near the top of any leaderboard, and this shtick reeks of desperation, at least on Mickelson’s part, to take us back to the glory days when he and Tiger were actually rivals.

Those days are long gone.

With young stars like Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler, and Rory McIlroy on tour, it just feels like two old guys who want to relive their glory days one last time.
