Just the facts: Carolina Hurricanes 4 Vegas Golden Knights 1
Story line: Vegas looked sleepy tonight, mustering four shots in the first period.
Goalie woes: VGK’s Adin Hill gave up four goals and was pulled midway through the second period. He was replaced by Akira Schmid.
Original Misfit return: William Carrier, a hard-charging, speedy member of the 2017 Vegas Golden Knights came back to the Big Ice House by the Strip for Carolina. He played in the Knights’ first seven seasons.
VGK record: Knights drop to 9-4-2 for 20 points.
End of streak; After Golden Knights won eight straight home games to open 2023-24 season, tonight was the first home loss for the VGK.
Bad mistake: VGK defenseman Shea Theodore made a miserable pass to start a power play as the puck deflected off a Hurricanes’ player’s skate to Jordan Staal, who fired the puck past Hill in the second period. The Staal shorty gave the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead and deflated Vegas.
Carolina goal-scorers: Eric Robinson, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Tyson Jost plus Staal. Jordan Martinook added an empty-netter.
Vegas goal-scorers: Jack Eichel, Ivan Barbashev (both were third period garbage time goals)
VGK next game: vs Anaheim Ducks in Anaheim Wednesday at 7PM.
Attendance announced: 17,908
Postgame presser quote from coach Bruce Cassidy: “It was a team loss.” Cassidy mentioned the Knights waited too long to respond to Carolina’s in-your-face pressure and forechecking.
