The NHL’s defending champs went on the road to Dallas as a wild card qualifier for the Stanley Cup Playoffs’ opening round and are returning to Las Vegas with two wins as the Golden Knights look to take a 3-0 lead in the first round against the Dallas Stars on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.
Just the facts: Vegas Golden Knights 3 Dallas Stars 1
Story line: VGK’s vaunted defense frustrated a deep top-seeded Dallas team.
VGK goal scorers: After Dallas’ Jason Robertson opened the scoring in the first period, VGK’s top goal-scorer, Jonathan Marchessault, tied the game near the end of the opening stanza by taking a magnificent pass from Jack Eichel. With Eichel luring both Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger and a defenseman toward him, he flipped a deftly-placed backhand pass to Marchessault who immediately fired the puck into an unguarded net. It was 1-1 after one period.
Defenseman Noah Hanifin, a prize acquisition by VGK General Manager Kelly McCrimmon, gave the Knights a 2-1 lead in period two. Eichel closed the deal in Game 2 with an empty-netter in the final minute of the game.
