They’re back. Mark Stone, William Carrier, Chandler Stephenson and Anthony Mantha all returned to the Vegas Golden Knights lineup Monday in Dallas where the defending Stanley Cup champions took on the Dallas Stars in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup’s opening round.

Just the facts: Vegas Golden Knights 4 Dallas Stars 3 in Game 1 of Round 1

Golden Knights goal scorers: Stone on a slight re-direct; Jonathan Marchessault; and Tomas Hertl in the first period; Even defenseman Brayden McNabb scored for the VGK with the only goal in the second period; Those four goals were just enough in the VGK 4-3 win.

Story line: VGK scored four goals on only 11 shots through the first two periods. Vegas was poised and looked like it played with renewed swagger with team captain Stone and others back in the lineup.

Attendance: 18,532

Familiar sight: The Golden Knights have appeared in the playoffs six of their seven years and Dallas coach Pete DeBoer has been a part of that as either the opponents’ coach or the VGK coach. DeBoer was the coach of the San Jose Sharks when the Sharks played VGK in 2018 and 2019. He then coached Vegas to playoff appearances in 2020 and 2021. He has now coached Dallas against Vegas in 2023 and 2024.

Goalie debut in playoffs: VGK coach Bruce Cassidy picked Logan Thompson over Adin Hill, who backstopped Vegas’ Stanley Cup championship run in 2023. Hill allowed several soft goals down the stretch, while this was Thompson’s first postseason start in his career.
