The Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken donned their Jan. 1 Winter Classic sweaters from the Seattle baseball stadium game for tonight’s showdown at T-Mobile Arena. The Kraken enjoyed a Jan. 1 win over the VGK and tonight they seek a win as they desperately try to catch up and snag a playoff spot.

Just the facts: Vegas Golden Knights 3 Seattle Kraken 1

Vegas Golden Knights goal scorers: Jack Eichel tucked in the puck past Seattle goalie Philipp Grubauer with a backhander after Jonathan Marchessault made a nice pass from beyond the end line in the first period to open the scoring. It was Eichel’s 22nd goal of the season.

Keegan Kolesar scored his sixth of the season with 1:20 left in the third to break a 1-1 tie.  Chandler Stephenson scored an empty-netter for the final 3-1 win.

Story line: VGK played a solid defensive game and goalie Logan Thompson was reliable.

Attendance: 18,033

VGK record: 37-25-7 for 81 points

VGK coach’s takeaway: Bruce Cassidy on team not getting nervous after Seattle tied game, “They get it back on track.” Also on goalie Logan Thompson, “No team wins without timely saves.”

Knights’ next game:  Saturday vs Columbus.
