Las Vegas’ traditional niche in college football has been UNLV’s football program and the Las Vegas Bowl in December.

But college football’s changing landscape of the elimination of the once-historic Pac-12 conference and new conferences that have college members from ocean-to-ocean has thrust Las Vegas and Allegiant Stadium into an evolving role.

Not only can Allegiant Stadium host one-off, cross-sectional games like BYU vs Notre Dame and LSU vs USC, it can also host media days for newly-shaped conferences.

The Big 12 conference is expanding into a 16-school, ten-state league with the addition of former Pac-12 universities Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah.

And now comes the news that the beefier conference will hold its annual media days at the Raiders-managed Allegiant Stadium July 9 and 10.

“I’m thrilled to announce Big 12 Football Media Days are heading west for the first time in league history,” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said in a conference release.

“The Big 12 lives at the intersection of sports and entertainment – as the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas is an ideal location to kick off the 2024 season. We are grateful to the Las Vegas Raiders and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority for their partnership and support.”

With western schools like Utah, Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado being added to the Big 12 Conference, Las Vegas can be a decent geographic center for events like media days.
