Super Bowl week has been filled with many predictable storylines: How the NFL once spurned Las Vegas, but now embraces Sin City. The Taylor Swift effect on NFL sales. And how Las Vegas is in all its glory hosting its first ever Super Bowl.
Amid the over-the-top hype is one story that is likely the most under-rated and under-reported story during Super Bowl 58 week.
The Raiders franchise is now valued at $6.2 billion thanks to the revenue-generating powers of Allegiant Stadium, but the team that runs the domed, 62,500-seat stadium pays ushers, cleaners and concessions cashiers $13 an hour — less than what many fast food workers receive.
With that in mind, Culinary union leaders in Las Vegas say they hope to work with Raiders executives to unionize 1,500 workers at Allegiant Stadium. The culinary officials point out that the MLB Athletics have already agreed to have Culinary members at their planned stadium for the Strip in 2028.
The Culinary leaders picked Super Bowl 58 week in Las Vegas to announce they want to negotiate with the Raiders to unionize workers there. The Culinary said it would affect 1,500 workers.
JC Tretter, the former Packers and Browns player who has a labor relations degree from Cornell, said the rank-and-file supported the NFL players during an owners lockout and the NFL Players Association is here to support the Allegiant Stadium workers.
