Las Vegas Events — the LVCVA’s nonprofit events arm — has sponsored the NBA Summer League with a $600,000 deal.

The NBA Summer League — a gathering of the worldwide professional basketball world and the NBA’s 30 teams — has become a major sports draw for the Las Vegas market in mid-July.

The NBA Summer League organizers, Warren LeGarie and Albert Hall, work with UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center to put on an event that was a sellout of 17,500 strong for the first day of the July 7-17 event. The crowd for the Spurs-Hornets game at Thomas & Mack included NBA all-time greats Kareem Abdul-Jabber and Jerry West.

Las Vegas Events knows Thomas & Mack Center well because it also works with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) to put on a 10-day rodeo event at the building.

Friday’s opening day featured the professional debut of the much-heralded Victor Wembanyama, the overall number one draft pick selected by the San Antonio Spurs. Wembanyama and the Spurs faced the Charlotte Hornets and the NBA’s No. 2 overall pick, Brandon Miller.

You might recall the sellout of 17,500 for the debut of Zion Williamson at the 2019 Summer League in Las Vegas. An earthquake ended the activities of that particular night on July 5, 2019.

Wembanyama made only two of his 13 shots and scored nine points as the Spurs defeated the Hornets.
