The Oakland Athletics have outlined their proposed tax district for a ballpark at Tropicana Avenue and Dean Martin Drive just west of Interstate 15 in private meetings with Clark County commissioners.

But Clark County is waiting to see what happens in the Nevada Legislature before the Athletics’ proposed ballpark is discussed publicly at any county meeting, LVSportsBiz,com has heard.

The Athletics management and its lobbyists and representatives are talking with Gov. Joe Lombardo and legislative leaders about a tax district that would include a $1.5 billion ballpark of 30,000-32,000 seats. The tax district would generate revenues from sales on entertainment and payroll, and the A’s are looking to get an exemption from property taxes in the county, LVSportsBiz.com confirmed Monday.

Here’s a look at the proposed ballpark site. It’s just west of T-Mobile Arena and north of the Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium. MGM Resorts International, which built the arena with Los Angeles-based Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) in 2016, runs the venue that’s home to the NHL Vegas Golden Knights and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

LVSportsBiz.com visited the ballpark site Monday and saw road work being done on Tropicana Avenue bordering the land.

The chambers of commerce in Southern Nevada have endorsed the Athletics relocation/ballpark government help proposal, but LVSportsBiz,com is not aware of any elected officials who have advocated for the Athletics ballpark funding plan that asked for public help. The MLB franchise has requested government assistance of $500 million in public incentives and tax credits.

Athletics team president Dave Kaval told LVSportsBiz.com last month he’d like to submit an application  to Major League Baseball in the summer and have MLB owners approve the A’s relocation to Las Vegas in the fall. It’s likely that MLB would approve the deal only if the host community shows some level of public financial assistance.

The Athletics are already 14 games behind first place in their division, winning eight of 36 games so far.
