The Raiders saluted NASCAR legend Richard Petty, sung Happy Birthday to two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Jim Plunkett and played the “Rays-derrrrrrz” chant throughout the game.

But in the end, the Raiders showed why they’re an average team, winning as many games as it loses.

After the Raiders took their only lead in the game with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter on a Daniel Carlson field goal, the Washington Football Team responded with a drive to set up the game-winning 48-yard field goal by placekicker Brian Johnson.

Both teams have won six games and lost six games.

“We have to figure that out,,” Raiders receiver Hunter Renfrow said about the team’s slow offensive starts and the urgency coming later in games.

“We have to find a way to score more than 15 points,” Raiders interim coach Rich Bisaccia said after the loss.

And then Bisaccia responded to the issue of the Raiders’ having so many highs and lows:

The Raiders’ slow start theme this season was apparent in the first quarter.

Washington marched down the field to take a 7-0 lead and the Raiders trailed after the first 15 minutes.

The Raiders mustered only 110 yards of offense in the first half and their only scoring came on a Daniel Carlson 52-yard field goal with four seconds left in the half. Quarterback Derek Carr was 15 of 19 for only 80 yards and Carr was the team’s top rusher with 24 yards as Josh Jacobs ran only four times for 14 yards.

The biggest cheer in first half was when scoreboard showed Richard Petty in his suite seat.

Carlson booted another FG in the third quarter, so the Raiders trailed by a single point.

Entering the fourth quarter, Washington led, 7-6.

But the lead ballooned to 14-6 after Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke tossed a four-yard TD pass to running back Antonio Gibson.

Carr then opened the offense. He completed nice gainers to Hunter renfrow and DeSean Jackson and Jacobs capped the drive with a one-yard TD run.

But a two-point conversion attempt failed on a Carr misfire and the Raiders trailed 14-12 midway through the fourth quarter.

The Raiders defense then made a crucial play. A Nate Hobbs interception after Maxx Crosby hit Heinicke’s arm set up a Carlson 37-yard field goal.

For the first time in the game with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter, the Raiders had a lead: 15-14 over Washington.

But Washington responded. Heinicke led the Team into field goal range and placekicker Brian Johnson booted a 48-yarder for the winning points in the final minute.
