Former Raiders Player Henry Ruggs III To Be Charged With DUI Resulting In Death In Connection To Woman’s Death In Car Crash In Central Vegas Valley Early Tuesday; Raiders Release Ruggs

A woman was killed in a car crash in the central Las Vegas Valley a few miles west of the Strip early Tuesday and a prominent Las Vegas Raiders player will charged with DUI resulting in death. He was released by the Raiders later in the day.

Police have not identified the 23-year-old woman who died.

The Raiders player to be charged is Henry Ruggs III, a wide receiver who was the first player ever drafted by the Raiders as a Las Vegas-based NFL franchise. He was the 12th overall player drafted in 2020. Ruggs played for Alabama in college and was known for his speed.

Here is the Las Vegas Metro Police Department report on the fatal crash that left Ruggs with non-life threatening injuries. DUI resulting in death is punishable of two to 20 years in prison. Ruggs, 22, has lawyered up with David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld. Ruggs also faces another felony charge, reckless driving, which carries a punishment of one to six years in prison, with probation available.

In a statement Tuesday night, the Raiders tweeted simply, “The Las Vegas Raiders have released WR Henry Ruggs III.”

Andrew Bennett, the state of Nevada’s pointman on road safety, advised media to use the term, “crash,” not “accident.”

In January, Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs stepped off a jet from Denver after the Raiders beat the Broncos, got into a car and crashed it in a single-car crash near the airport connector and Sunset Road outside McCarran International Airport around 4:42 a.m.

Jacobs suffered some minor injuries from the crash and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The 22-year-old second-year NFL player was then “transported to the Clark County Detention Center where he was booked on a DUI charge,” according to NFL.com at the time.

It’s been a turbulent few months for the Raiders. The team president, Marc Badain, resigned unexpectedly in July and former coach Jon Gruden quit the team last month after his insulting and toxic emails were made public in news reports.
