A Halloween crowd of 18,035 watched the Vegas Golden Knights lose, 5-4, in overtime to the Montreal Canadiens after the VGK could not keep a 4-2 lead in the third period.

The Knights could not close the deal as Montreal scored with a minute and 58 seconds left in regulation to knot the score at four apiece. Former Golden Knight Tomas Tatar scored at 13:33 and Brendan Gallagher added the equalizer at 18:02 of the third period.

Then Max Domi scored 26 seconds into overtime. The Knights took their foot off the accelerator in the third period as Montreal climbed back in the game.

After eight home dates (nearly one-fifth of the home schedule), the Knights are averaging 18,240 attendance per game — slightly down from the 18,319 per game attendance from last season. The 18,240 per-game crowd is still filling T-Mobile Arena to 105 percent of capacity, which is considered 17,367 for VGK home games in the venue.

Here’s VGK forward Jonathan Marchessault explaining why the Knights could not close out the game to attain the two points. The Knights are 8-5-1 after 14 games, including eight at home.

VGK fans did welcome back third line forward Alex Tuch and defenseman Nate Schmidt after both suffered injuries. VGK coach Gerard Gallant said he was pleased with their performances.

The Knights’ Cody Glass and Mark Stone scored in period three to give the Knights a 4-2 edge. Montreal responded by scoring two goals to knot the score at four at the end of regulation and then won early in overtime.

It’s Halloween in Las Vegas Thursday, so the VGK faithful came dressed for the occasion at the Vegas Golden Knights showdown with the Montreal Canadiens.

The VGK management actually encouraged it, advising 18,000 fans who pack T-Mobile Arena to wear costumes to the Big Ice House by the Strip.

And they came ready. And the mascots, too.
