LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The MLB Athletics have hired a former fast-rising former Single-A minor league pitching coach and ex-college baseball coach as their next general manager.

The A’s today will introduce 36-year-old Cam Castro as their GM as the Major League Baseball franchise prepares to move to Las Vegas in 2028 to open a new $2 billion domed stadium on the Strip at the former Tropicana hotel site. The stadium is on schedule to make its debut at the southeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue.

The A’s hired Castro from the just-crowned World Series champion Milwaukee Brewers, where he worked as the senior vice president of player development and performance. Castro worked eight years with the Brewers.

Castro will work with the Athletics’ new president of baseball operations, Taylor Smith. Smith, 31, who worked two years with the Boston Red Sox after seven years with the Tampa Bay Rays.

This story will be updated later this afternoon when the A’s introduce Castro to the media.

During his eight-year tenure with the Brewers, Castro was charged with overseeing skill development strategies used by the team to train and develop minor league players. He also oversaw the team’s high performance systems, including medical operations, and served as a player-development bridge from the front office to the big league team’s coaching staff.

“Cam will be an awesome addition to the front office and a great partner to me in running this organization,” Smith said in a press release. “He has experiences and skillsets that will complement me and the very talented people that we already have in the organization. He’s one of the best development minds in the game with a proven track record of building the systems and processes that develop a winner.”

Castro joined the Brewers in 2019 as their Single-A pitching coach after spending seven seasons coaching at the collegiate level with Defiance College and Lake Erie College.

With the Brewers, he also held the roles of minor league pitching coordinator, director of pitching development, and vice president of player development. Castro graduated from Lake Erie College with a bachelor’s degree in legal studies and from Defiance College with a master’s degree in sports management and worked as a trainer at Driveline Baseball.

“I’m beyond thankful to John Fisher, Taylor Smith, Ross Bowen and the entire Athletics organization for this opportunity,” Castro said in the media release. “The A’s are a historic franchise with an incredible legacy. I look forward to being a part of the next chapter of A’s baseball and developing a team, culture, and organization that our fans will be proud of.”
