LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Well, it took two decades and one relocated franchise, but MLB’s two payroll-challenged teams by the Bays — Athletics and Rays — have their new palatial stadium plans in place after Hillsborough County and city of Tampa elected officials approved a public subsidy for the Rays ballpark.
The Rays, playing in St. Petersburg, will receive a stadium subsidy of $876 million ($796 million from Hillsborough County and $80 million from the city of Tampa.) The Rays’ ballpark price is $2.3 billion and it will be near the NFL Buccaneers stadium.
The Rays stadium to be built in Tampa is scheduled to open in 2029.
The A’s, playing in West Sacramento while their stadium is built on the Strip, received a $380 million subsidy from the state of Nevada and Clark County. The A’s stadium price is $2 billion and it’s located at one of the busiest intersections on the Strip at the former Tropicana hotel site.
The A’s ballpark is scheduled to open in 2028. The stadium’s public financing was approved by Nevada state legislators in 2023.
