LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The Las Vegas sports day began in the morning at the Raiders’ swanky headquarters where a new head coach was introduced and ended at the ol’ workhorse arena on the UNLV campus where the Runnin’ Rebels defeated San Jose State, 82-75.

The contrast was clear — New Las Vegas and the Raiders and their all-time living players like Howie Long and Marcus Allen flanking new head coach Klint Kubiak and Old Las Vegas and the UNLV men’s basketball team in front of Vegas’ white-haired UNLV fans who found their red ballcaps and red UNLV jackets for tonight’s game.

That’s Las Vegas these days — UNLV, NASCAR and NFR staging their events and the new guys like NFL Raiders, NHL Golden Knights and F1 bringing their fans.

There’s room for both, old Vegas and new Vegas. That’s what the NBA is thinking as the Association will likely vote later this year to expand to Sin City and Seattle.

It wasn’t a big crowd at Thomas & Mack Center. But the UNLV faithful watched an entertaining first half that ended with UNLV holding a 45-41 lead.

Midway through the second half, the Runnin’ Rebels extended the lead over San Jose State to 70-57.

But as UNLV has done this year, it lost its lead and San Jose State crept within four points at 74-70 before UNLV secured the 82-75 win.

UNLV has now won 12 games and lost 12 games in their 24 games, including a 7-6 record in the Mountain West.  Attendance was reported at 4,653 at Thomas and Mack tonight.
