LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Shocking development. No overtime for the Vegas Golden Knights tonight.
That quick start was not a thing for the Vegas Golden Knights, down, 2-0, to the Seattle Kraken after one period Saturday night.
Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said after the game the team needs to focus on getting better starts — a theme that has emerged this season.
“The guys know what time the game is,” Cassidy said. “They’re not engaged enough.”
It looked as if the VGK had Seattle right where they wanted them.
The comeback kids of Vegas scored two goals in the second period, including the second one by Mitch Marner with a mere 12 seconds left in the middle stanza to deadlock the game at two apiece entering the third period. Jack Eichel assisted on both VGK goals, his 43rd and 44th helpers of the season.
But Vegas could not score a third goal.
Seattle did, though, in the third period and that was your final.
Kraken 3 Golden Knights 2.
But then Vegas was back in comeback mode after Seattle scored in the third period on a goal by Kaapo Kakko and the Kraken led, 3-2.
The Knights seem to go into overtime often this season.
But the team could not come through with the equalizer.
The VGK pulled their goalie, Akira Schmid, but the 6-on-5 failed to tie the score.
The LVSportsBiz.com lead photo says it all — four VGK guys clumped together and Seattle’s Eeli Tolvanen skating in to pick up the loose change and deposit the puck past Schmid for an easy goal 6:50 into the game. Jared McCann scored his 16th for Seattle’s second goal in the first period.
Cassidy said the Knights defensemen need to be “more competitive in front of the net.”
The Knights are off to Anaheim for a Sunday game against the Ducks with a 25-15-14 record and 64 points. Seattle improves to 26-19-9 for 61 points, only three points behind Vegas.
