LAS VEGAS, Nevada — If hockey games were 20 minutes long, the Vegas Golden Knights would have enjoyed a lovely evening.
They dominated a perennial playoff team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, in the first period by taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission and taking 15 shots on goal to the Lightning’s four. Ivan Barbashev scored both goals for the VGK.
But NHL games last 60 minutes and the Lightning struck for two goals in the second period for a 2-2 deadlock entering the third period.
And in that final 20-minute stanza, Tampa Bay poured in four goals led by superstar Nikita Kucherov’s two tallies, and the Lightning skated out of Las Vegas with a 6-3 win over a startled VGK squad.
Mitch Marner scored the Knights’ lone goal after the first period, tying the score at three apiece 3:37 into the third period.
But Brandon Hagel gave Tampa Bay a 4-3 lead, with that man, Kucherov, scoring again for a two-goal lead on Vegas. Hagel added an empty-netter for the 6-3 final.
Vegas dropped to 7-3-3 for 17 points on this six-game homestand and plays Anaheim Saturday.
