LAS VEGAS, Nevada — It was a night for the Vegas Golden Knights to draw Latino fans to their Noche de Los VGK game, with Dia de Los Muertes face painting available before the VGK-Detroit game Tuesday night.
It’s an age-old issue for the National Hockey League, which enjoys packed arenas but lacks the diverse TV watchers to pump up viewership numbers that can lead to more lucrative media sponsorships and rights deals.
LVSportsBiz.com has reported on the Golden Knights’ program to lure more Hispanic fans to their games at T-Mobile Arena, which enjoys game-in, game-out sellouts.
The Knights had a close, competitive game with the Red Wings, a team with a nice 9-win, 4-loss record entering tonight’s ice battle.
It was a battle of goaltenders, with Vegas skating away with a slim 1-0 win.
Detroit’s goalie was veteran 32-year-old John Gibson, who has seen lots of Vegas players in his time from his skirmishes against Vegas as the longtime goalie of the Anaheim Ducks.
Vegas led, 1-0, after two periods, with Knights forward Ivan Barbashev scoring the game’s sole goal in the first 40 minutes.
The VGK had Akira Schmid in goal and he was solid through the first two periods, stopping all 14 shots on goal that came his way.
Vegas held on to its 1-0 lead in the final period to secure the two points. The VGK are now 7-2-3 for 17 points and host Tampa Bay Thursday.
