LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Can Las Vegas’ sports renaissance help the market’s sagging monthly tourism numbers?
Las Vegas’ publicly-funded tourism board — the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) — said July’s visitation of 3,089,300 was down 12 percent from July 2024. That f0llows a dismal June when Las Vegas tourism was down 11.3 percent over June 2024’s visitation numbers.
Other metrics show hotel occupancy rate of 76.1 percent for July, down 7.6 percent from a year ago while the average daily room rate of $154.76 was down 3.4 percent from July 2024.
The revenue per available room also took a hit as the $117.77 number for July was down 12.1 percent from 12 months earlier. It was $134.05 in July 2024.
Las Vegas’ visitation numbers are “correcting” themselves,” local tourism consultant Jeremy Aguero told LVSportsBiz.com in an interview at Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance’s Perspective event earlier this month.
The LVCVA, which sponsors the annual F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix race, NBA Summer League and many other sports events, counts on sports tourism to help drive visitation.
Not all was gloom as the LVCVA reported that convention attendees were up 10.7 percent to 278,400.
There is lots of chatter about Strip hotels charging prices that are keeping visitors away.
But Aguero ticked off other factors such as inflation, travellers aging out and less international visitors that are contributing to Las Vegas’ slumping visitation numbers.
In September, the Raiders will start their home schedule of games that attract many out-of-town fans, while a big Crawford vs. Canelo boxing match at Allegiant Stadium is expected to be another visitor draw.
Then in November, a major sports event — the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix — is held Nov. 20-22 with the two-hour race on the 3.8-mile Strip corridor happening on that Saturday, Nov. 22. The Raiders will host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, Nov. 23, while the UNLV football team plays Hawaii on that Friday, Nov. 21. So, Las Vegas should be booked that weekend between F1 and two football games.
