Clark County Commissioners Approve Money To Build 215 Western Beltway Trail Tunnel To Cross Charleston Boulevard In Summerlin

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Back in Dec. 2020, I spoke with a Channel 8 reporter about the dangers of bicycling on the 215 Western Beltway Trail across Charleston Boulevard in Summerlin. Motorists were turning on and off the 215 beltway without yielding to bicyclists putting them at risk, while some drivers simply blocked the at-grade crossing.
Now nearly five years later, Clark County commissioners yesterday have approved $18.7 million in pay for a trail “Undercrossing” or tunnel below Charleston Boulevard so that bicyclists will not have to be threatened by reckless or dangerous driving behavior by drivers when they cross the busy thoroughfare.
The 215 Western Beltway Trail also includes another improvement under the funding that will go to the company that seems to dominate the paving scene in Las Vegas, Las Vegas Paving. That work involves improving the 215 Beltway Trail from Fort Apache Road to Peace Way.
Here’s the Clark County commissioners’ action info, showing the funding approval, the two bidders, the project description and contact info for Las Vegas Paving.

The background info says the contractor, Las Vegas Paving, is supposed to complete the job within 180 calendar days from the date specified in the notice to proceed.
The Las Vegas area is generally very weak in bicycle resources as the national People For Bikes city ratings system ranked Las Vegas 1647th out of 2579 cities, a lowly 36th percentile rating.
This area needs every bicycle trail it can get.
Maybe one day there will be a trail connecting fast-growing Summerlin to the popular Red Rock Scenic Drive.
