LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The Vegas Golden Knights will not host a Game 7 Saturday because the VGK took care of business in Game 6 in Minnesota to defeat the Wild in six games and advance to Round 2 while also saying goodbye to former Knights star Marc-Andre Fleury.
The Golden Knights defeated Minnesota, 3-2, on goals by Shea Theodore, Jack Eichel and Mark Stone and a competitive series against the second wild card Wild was over.
The game also marked the end of the historic and memorable career of Fleury, who won three Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins before Vegas claimed him in the 2017 expansion draft. Fleury anchored an astonishing VGK team in 2018 by leading the Knights to the Stanley Cup Final. The VGK players waited and tapped their sticks on the ice as Fleury left the NHL ice surface for one last time.
Theodore scored a power play goal in period one to get the Knights going. Then Stone dropped a gorgeous pass to Eichel who zoomed in on Wild goalie Filip Gustafsson and beat him with a goal to give VGK a 2-1 lead in the second period.
Stone redirected a pass from VGK defenseman Brayden “The Nabber” McNabb to give Vegas an insurance goal in the third before Minnesota’s Ryan Hartman scored his second goal of the game to cut the VGK lead to a single goal at 3-2.
Vegas goalie Adin Hill stopped 29 of 31 shots on goal to allow Vegas to hold on to the series-clinching win.
Minnesota won two of the first three games, but Vegas won two overtime games and the 3-2 clincher in Game 6 Thursday.
The Knights will play the Edmonton Oilers in the second round after the Oilers defeated the Los Angeles Kings, four games to two, tonight with a 6-4 win in Game 6.
The Golden Knights defeated Edmonton in the second round on the road to their Stanley Cup championship in 2023.
