LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Alex Ovechkin is the National Hockey League’s King of Goals after he scored his 895th career goal Saturday to break Wayne Gretzky’s previous record of 894.
Some of Ovechkin’s goals came at T-Mobile Arena, home ice of the Vegas Golden Knights. In fact, the NHL’s new supreme goal master notched a hat trick against the VGK in November.
And Ovechkin’s greatest team accomplishment was winning the Stanley Cup in Game 5 of the NHL Finals against the VGK in June 2018.
Ovechkin’s record-breaking 895th career goal was a power play tally, the sole goal in a 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders. The 39-year-old Russian beat fellow Russian and Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin for the historic goal.
On Nov. 17, 2024, Ovechkin racked up three goals in Washington’s 5-2 win over the Golden Knights.
