LAS VEGAS, Nevada — We all make mistakes.

Like the NHL official who whistled VGK captain Mark Stone for a phantom tripping penalty against the Boston Bruins in the opening period tonight.

The Golden Knights killed the penalty.

And how can you be surprised if a makeup penalty call would be whistled against the Bruins.

It happened in the second period, a slashing penalty against Boston defenseman Nikita Zadorov.

And Vegas cashed in.

VGK marksman Pavel Dorofeyev snapped a wrist shot past Boston goalie Jeremy Swayman and the Knights had a 1-0 lead.

Dorofeyev than scored again with 50 seconds left in period two for his team-leading 29th and Vegas skated into the second intermission with a 2-0 lead.

There were lots of Bruins fans in the building, which helped the attendance to be announced at 18,225.

The Knights defense returned to its smothering form as the VGK limited the Bruins to only 11 shots in the first 40 minutes, including four in the second period.

Speaking of returns, William Karlsson was back at his center position, anchoring the third line with his Misfit buddy Reilly Smith and do-it-all forward Nic Roy.

Karlsson, along with forward Brandon Saad, was buzzing around the ice tonight and looked strong.

In period three, Brett Howden, elevated from fourth-line center to a winger with Karlsson and Smith, scored his 19th.

And then the hats flew for Dorofeyev after he scooped up a rebound on his backhand and flung the puck into the net for his third of the game and 30th of the season.

Vegas 4 Boston 0.

Bruce Cassidy, VGK coach

Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy mentioned that Dorofeyev, 24, has been a hard-working player making his incremental improvement steps from Henderson to the big club. “He earned it,” Cassidy said of the second line right-winger. “The big test for Pav will be the playoffs.”

Jack Eichel made a superb rush and fed line mate Ivan Barbashev for a goal and Vegas enjoyed a 5-0 lead to salt away the win. Eichel has piled up 21 goals and 61 assists for 82 points, and he could become the franchise’s first 100-point scorer.

VGK goalie Adin Hill saw his shutout bid dashed when Boston’s Morgan Geekie delivered a garbage time goal and the Knights skated off the ice with a 5-1 win.

Vegas is 40-20-8 for 88 points and continue to lead the Pacific Division with games at home Saturday and Sunday.

Vegas is three points ahead of Edmonton in the division with one game at hand. VGK play the Red Wings Saturday and the Lightning Sunday, with both games are at 5 PM.
