LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The A’s have a new team president and he knows something about building stadiums in Las Vegas.

Former Raiders team president Marc Badain is now the Athletics president, taking over for Dave Kaval, who recently resigned.

The A’s and Raiders were not exactly friendly co-tenants at the Coliseum in Oakland, so not too many people had Badain taking over for Kaval on their bingo cards.

But sports and stadiums can make for strange bed fellows as they say, so expect Badain to appear on behalf of the A’s at Las Vegas Stadium Authority Board meetings — just like he did when he was the president of the NFL Raiders before leaving in July 2021.

Badain guided the Raiders through the process of building their NFL stadium on the west side of Interstate 15 across from Mandalay Bay. The stadium was built on time and on budget in 2020.

It’s back to the future for Badain, who will now help A’s owner John Fisher try and build a $1.75 billion domed stadium on the former Tropicana hotel-casino site on the Strip.

The stadium will have 30,000 fixed seats and room for 3,000 more fans for a capacity of 33,000. It will include a lot of premium seating options. Bally’s wants to build a hotel next to the A’s stadium with a pedestrian bridge connecting the two buildings.

There are many skeptics who believe Fisher, who failed to build an A’s stadium at several proposed sites in the Bay area, does not have the money or the commitment to follow through on building an A’s stadium at the southeast corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue.

Hiring Badain shows the A’s are serious.

Badain resigned from the Raiders in July 2021 following a long career at the NFL team. Badain’s career with the Raiders began in 1991 as a training camp intern before becoming the team’s chief financial officer in 2004.

In 2018, LVSportsBiz.com wrote about Badain’s bio in a story contrasting his career path at the Raiders with the career of Vegas Golden Knights president Kerry Bubolz.

After Badain’s career with the Raiders, he joined arena developer Tim Leiweke’s Oak View Group to try and build an NBA arena as part of a major multi-billion-dollar hotel-casino project at Las Vegas Boulevard and Blue Diamond Road.

Sandy Dean, who was serving as interim president, will now be vice chairman. In this new position, Dean will continue to represent the Fisher ownership group and remain involved in develop the A’s stadium in Las Vegas.
