LAS VEGAS, Nevada — An interesting thing happened after UNLV’s most publicized player, Dedan Thomas Jr., was injured in the Fresno State game Feb. 15 and missed the last four games.
The Runnin’ Rebels lost to Colorado State, but then reeled off three straight wins against San Jose State, Nevada and then San Diego State Tuesday night.
UNLV closed out the win against a battle-tested San Diego State squad, 74-67, with Julian Rishwain pouring in a career-high 26 points (including 6 of 9 from three-point land) and Jaden Henley adding 17. Other double-digit scorers included Jalen Hill with 11 and Jailen Bedford with ten.
UNLV coach Kevin Kurger began his postgame presser, “Obviously, couldn’t be more happy and proud for the guys. Especially on Senior Night, there are always thoughts about the emotions and the day for seniors and if it will affect them.
“But for this group it didn’t do anything but energize them. It’s something that they will remember forever, especially against a good team like San Diego State, that has controlled the conference for 20 years.”
UNLV made 25 of 49 shots, good for a 51 percent shooting percentage.
UNLV outscored San Diego State, 42-33, in the second half after San Diego State led by a bucket at the half.
The Runnin’ Rebels swept the Aztecs in both games this regular season. It was the first time UNLV did that since 2012-13.
UNLV is now 17-13 on the season with a final game against conference leader New Mexico Friday before the Mountain West Conference tournament is staged here at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas next week. San Diego State dropped to 20-8.
UNLV reported attendance at 5,393.
