LAS VEGAS, Nevada — It’s a terrific and legit rivalry.
Dallas and Vegas — two second-place teams going at it before an announced 17,811 at T-Mobile Arena Tuesday night after battling each other in the past two Stanley Cup playoffs.
The link is Stars coach Pete DeBoer, who coached San Jose when the Sharks and Knights were fierce rivals then actually took over Vegas behind the bench before getting fired by the VGK and landing a job as Dallas’ head coach.
Vegas took a 3-1 lead in the second period.
But Knights killer Wyatt Johnston of Dallas scored a natural hat trick — a shorty in the second period, a game-tying tally in period three and the game-winner in OT for the Stars’ comeback 4-3 win over Vegas.
The Knights showed juice early, taking a 1-0 lead a Jack Eichel goal after a pass from Mark Stone to Ivan Barbahev to Eichel on the doorstep gave Vegas an advantage about two minutes into the game.
After Dallas’ Mavrik Bourque tied the score at one apiece, Tomas Hertl shoveled the puck past Stars goalie Jake Oettinger after a nice power move to the Dallas net by VGK defenseman Nic Hague.
It was Vegas 2 Dallas 1 after one period
VGK winger Pavel Dorofeyev notched his 22nd goal of the season on a 5-on-3 power play in period two.
But with Vegas still holding a man advantage, 21-year-old Dallas center Johnston scored a shorthanded goal to cut into the VGK two-goal lead.
After two periods, Vegas 3 Dallas 2.

It was a playoff atmosphere in period three as Vegas held that 3-2 lead with about eight minutes left.
But Johnston, who haunted the Knights in Dallas’ seven-game series win in the first round of the playoffs last season, fired a gorgeous top-shelf shot that beat VGK goalie Adin Hill.
With 7:44 left in the third period, it was Vegas 3 Dallas 3.
The game went into OT.
And it was that young man, Johnston, who did in the Knights.
He scored the game-winner in overtime and Dallas had another 4-3 win over Vegas.
Vegas is now 3-6-2 in its last 11 games and have 67 points with a 31-15-4 record.
The Golden Knights are back in action Thursday when Columbus visits the Big Ice House by the Strip.
