LAS VEGAS, Nevada — While most of America was rooting for the Buffalo Bills to upend the two-time defending NFL champion Kansas City Chiefs Sunday, the National Hockey League’s last two Stanley Cup winners took to the ice just off the Strip.

The Vegas Golden Knights, the 2023 Cup winners, hosted last season’s NHL champs, the Florida Panthers, for a 5 PM game after the Panthers took care of business last night in San Jose with a 7-2 win over the Sharks.

The Chiefs may have disappointed America with yet another win over the Bills in the playoffs and another Super Bowl appearance. The Chiefs will play Philadelphia in Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans in two weeks.

But the Golden Knights shut down the defending Cup holders with a 4-1 win behind the solid goaltending of Adin Hill before an announced crowd of 17,716 Sunday. Hill stopped 32 of 33 Florida shots.

Brayden McNabb scored in the first period, Tanner Pearson scored in the second and Jack Eichel scored on a breakaway in the third to extend a 2-1 lead to 3-1. Tomas Hertl added an empty net goal to polish off the 4-1 win.

VGK are now 31-15-4 on the season for 66 points. Florida is 29-19-3 for 61 points.

The Knights host Dallas and their former coach, Pete DeBoer, Tuesday. Vegas lost to the Stars in Dallas Friday.

VGK coach Bruce Cassidy said the team is improving over a recent slump. “It’s getting there.”
