LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Granted, the Buffalo Sabres are a last-place team.

But the defensive work by the Vegas Golden Knights in the final game of a lengthy homestand Saturday was still a thing of beauty.

Before an announced crowd of 18,111, the Golden Knights stymied Buffalo, 3-1, behind a 23-of-24 save performance by Vegas netminder Adin Hill.

The VGK held Buffalo to six shots on goal in the opening period.

And then the lockdown was even better in the second period when the Sabres mustered a mere four shots.

After two periods, Vegas enjoyed a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by and Tanner Laczynski (his first of the season) and Mark Stone (his tenth). Both scored in the first 20 minutes.

Jack Eichel notched his 11th goal in the final period.

A Buffalo visit to the Big Ice House by the Strip means another reunion with winger Alex Tuch, a former popular Golden Knights player.

The Sabres scored their lone goal when Jason Zucker tipped in a power-play goal with only 2:17 left in the final period.

The Knights improved their record to 27-9-3 after 39 games for 57 points, which is a six-point cushion over Edmonton and the LA Kings in the Pacific Division.

VGK have won 16 of 20 home games and hit the road to San Jose Tuesday before returning to Vegas for a game against the Islanders Thursday and the Rangers in a week Saturday.
