Round 2 of the Great Athletics Stadium Subsidy Debate never took place Thursday.
There was a notice of an 11:30 AM Nevada Senate session, which was scheduled for 11:30 AM to 7:30 PM. But no video coverage came on during the day.
Insiders thought that meant the Athletics did not have a majority of votes in the 21-member Senate to push the $380 million government assistance bill across the finish line. It will be a close vote, but the Athletics likely did not have the votes. So, no meeting Thursday.
At Wednesday’s special session meeting, the Athletics representatives made their case for the state and Clark County coming up with $380 million in public aid to help build a $1.5 billion, 30,000-seat stadium at the Tropicana hotel-casino site on the Strip.
Opponents pushed back during the marathon meeting, with a former Oakland Athletics executive even calling team president Dave Kaval a “walking, talking bobblehead” during his testimony from Las Vegas.
Meanwhile, the Nevada Assembly gaveled the stadium issue Thursday and adjourned until Monday morning. Then the Senate was set to close shop until Monday, too.
So, there will be no approved Athletics stadium bill this week.
