Josh McDaniels strolled into the media room at the Raiders compound in Henderson and sized up the huge crowd of reporters, photographers and videographers waiting for the Raiders’ first-year coach.
“Welcome Boston,” McDaniels, the former Patriots offensive coordinator, told the room.
Reporters were crammed into corner of the room as McDaniels chatted about holding joint practices with the New England Patriots and his old boss, Bill Belichick.
When two teams practice together, the Raiders’ receivers compete against the Patriots cornerbacks with quarterback Derek Carr zipping passes to the Raiders’ Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow. The Patriots defensive linemen charge like bulls toward Raiders’ linemen like Alex Leatherwood.
The different players from opposing teams offer new looks and schemes that are helpful in practice, McDaniels pointed out at his 8:15AM presser.
“It’s as competitive a practice as we’ve ever had,” McDaniels said.
McDaniels on whether he is concerned about Raiders tight end Darren Waller missing practices: He’s not.
Then, he was asked about the Raiders offensive line, perceived as a weakness. “We learn every day. If we progress to first base, it’s first base. If we make it to second, we make it to second.” McDaniels explained the expectations are high and the linemen will be challenged to improve.
