Few people have challenged the Vegas Golden Knights since the NHL team was launched in 2017.
But a group of Henderson residents are taking on the popular NHL team and its plan to partner with the Henderson city government on an $84 million arena rebuild project at the Henderson Pavilion off Green Valley Parkway in the suburban city outside Las Vegas.
The organization, Henderson Coalition for Responsible Government, said Thursday it submitted the required number of signatures to force a public vote that would ask city residents whether public money should be used to help rebuild the Henderson Pavilion into the Henderson Events Center, a 6,000-seat arena that would house the VGK’s minor league team, the Henderson Silver Knights.
The city council has already voted, 4-1, to spend $42 million in public money on the $84 million events center project.
The group said the ballots will be verified by the Clark County Election Department. Signatures must be a registered Henderson voter. If 2,117 signatures are validated, then the City Clerk will certify the signatures. The City of Henderson, by statute (NRS295-215) has two options: Accept the petition language, or place it on the Nov. 4, ballot for a public vote. The group said it submitted 3,003 signatures.
Speaking of Henderson, take an aerial look at the Raiders headquarters in Henderson.
And here’s a stadium construction time lapse over 31 months of building the Raiders’ 65,000-seat domed stadium on 62 acres on the west side of Interstate 15 across from Mandalay Bay.
The Raiders’ reach across Las Vegas increased Thursday when the team said its team store, The Raider Image is open at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Honeywood on the Strip. The Raiders Image at Miracle Mile Shops is temporarily open from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., seven days a week.
Later this fall, the Image will be operating 14 brick-and-mortar locations throughout California and Nevada along with the flagship store at Allegiant Stadium. The Las Vegas area will have seven locations: Town Square Las Vegas, Galleria at Sunset Mall, Raiders Headquarters in Henderson, McCarran Airport, Fashion Show Mall, The Shoppes at Mandalay Place and Miracle Mile Shops.
