They came to MacKenzie River pizzeria at the Golden Knights’ training center in Summerlin more hungry for victory than pizza and the VGK fans exploded with cheers Thursday when Knights’ Jonathan Marchessault scored against San Jose to cut a deficit to 3-2 against the Sharks with less than 10 minutes left in period three of Game 5.

And then Marchessault’s linemate, Reilly Smith, steamed down the left side and received a pass on the doorstep of the San Jose goal, but couldn’t lift the puck over the Sharks’ beleaguered goaltender, Martin Jones. No tie score. And Golden Knights fans at the pizza pub that overlooks the VGK training rink  sighed in disappointment.

And then the pub went silent when the Sharks polished off the Knights in the first round game with two more goals and a 5-2 win, denying Vegas the chance to clinch the Round 1 series on San Jose home ice at the SAP Center in downtown San Jose.

The series shifts to Las Vegas, where the Knights will host the Sharks at T-Mobile Arena Sunday for Game 6. The time is to be determined.

Golden Knights fans across the Valley — from watch parties at the Henderson Pavilion to the Downtown Events Center in Las Vegas and in every bar in between — were hoping their home team would wrap up the first round showdown with the Sharks Thursday. Social media was filled with Golden Knights fans rooting for the home team, including some amusing posts from the the North Las Vegas Police Department and the local Clark County library system.

Here’s the N. Las Vegas police post on Twitter.

The library district serving metro Las Vegas had a lot of literary spunk in its Twitter posts, offering the equivalent of a hip check of book titles to the San Jose library system. Check out this group of social media posts.
