It was not a hockey masterpiece, but the Golden Knights will take the two points against the Edmonton Oilers in a 6-3 win as backup goalie Malcolm Subban backstopped the victory before 18,317 at the Big Ice House on the Strip Sunday evening.
It was win number eight out of nine games on St. Patrick’s Day, as fans enjoyed Jonathan Marchessault’s two goals and wearing green at T-Mobile Arena.
The Golden Knights are off to San Jose for a game Monday night, then it’s a home game Thursday when a strong Winnipeg playoff-bound team comes to Las Vegas Thursday evening. Here are comments by VGK coach Gerard Gallant postgame on the win.
Alex Tuch scored the Knights’ sixth goal in the third period to seal the game. Here are some Tuch postgame comments.
While Tuch registered his nineteenth goal of the season, Marchessault scored goals 21 and 22 of the season. Here’s Marchy’s comments.
The Knights are averaging 18,301 fans a game, well above the arena’s official 17,367 capacity for an NHL game. The VGK are filling T-Mobile Arena to 105.4 percent of capacity in season two, which is tied with Minnesota behind Chicago. Ticket revenue is strong as a recent ticket increase for three-year season ticket holders brought the average ticket price to $100.
The tickets are expensive with the Golden Knights expected to make the playoffs in year 2. Vegas will likely play either Calgary or San Jose in the first round in the best of seven.
Former Oilers great Wayne Gretzky was seen in the arena. But UFC’s Conor McGregor, who dropped the puck to start the Bruins game Saturday, was not seen in T-Mobile Arena Sunday. By the way, McGregor is still suspended, too.
But there were lots of Oilers fans in the venue Sunday evening.
Enjoy Tyge’s photos from the ice. The Knights are now 40-27-5 for 85 points.
