The helicopter is back and the cash will be flying.
The Las Vegas Lights FC, the downtown-based soccer team known for its off-beat promotions and sponsorship deals, is staging the cash drop via a helicopter drop for fans at halftime of a game on Sept. 7. A lucky 200 fans will rush the center of the pitch to get their hands on $5,000 in cash that will be dropped from a helicopter hovering above the field, plus another $5,000 in prizes.
In season one, the helicopter drop was a crowd-pleaser Sept. 8 as the Lights beefed up security for the promotion.
The Lights’ 17 home games in the 34-game season also include a Fourth of July celebration where fans will be given 3-D glasses and invited onto the Cashman Field pitch to watch fireworks encircle them from all 360 degrees. Lights players will wear a commemorative jersey of the infamous denim colored stars and stripes worn by the U.S. national soccer team in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
The Lights, at a March 30 game, will wear soccer jerseys designed to look like the Vegas Golden Knights’ hockey jerseys to salute the NHL team.
And on May 4, to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, free Luchador wrestling capes will be given to fans after Lights fans received free Luchador masks at a game last season.
The Lights are trying to turn around the product on the field under the guidance of new manager Eric Wynalda, a decorated former U.S. national team and MLS player.
